Stand up bags are relatively new in the world of packaging. Although these bags are ubiquitous in Europe and Asia, their use in the United States is only starting to expand. Despite being a latecomer, stand up pouches are fast becoming an attractive option for companies searching for an inexpensive and high-quality packaging material for food and liquid packaging.
Businesses in the United States are discovering that stand up bags have many advantages over their traditional counterparts.
(1) Storage and transportation
Stand up bags pack flat and they save businesses on inventory costs. The space it takes to store 1000 bags is significantly less than the space occupied by 1000 metal tins, or glass and plastic jars. This is because a stand up bag is essentially a plastic pouch. A similar argument can be made for transportation costs. A truck can transport several times more stand up bags in a single go than metal tins or glass and plastic jars.
(2) Low minimum run
Stand up bags have the minimum run in the packaging industry. This makes them affordable for small businesses, which can order as less as only 5000 pieces. The run for other packaging options is more, which can occasionally put a strain on the finances of a small business.
(3) Costs
Depending on the run, a stand up pouch costs around 15 cents apiece. This is less than half the price of its nearest competitor – the folded plastic carton – which costs approximately 35 cents apiece. Plastic jars are still more expensive as you pay between 45 and 50 cents apiece. The most expensive of the packaging options is the metal jar, whose per piece price can be between 50 and 60 cents, or even more.
(4) Printing
It is easier to get highly customized printing in the case of stand up pouches than in other packaging options. Printing on metal tins is labor intensive, and the results may not match the results achieved on stand up pouches. There are label issues with other packaging methods which simply do not exist in case of stand up pouches.
With all these advantages, it is no surprise that standup pouches are gaining popularity in the United States these days.
