Barrier Packaging Provides Great Freshness for Trail Mix

Trail mix is a high energy snack good for hiking, camping, snacking and socializing.  Developed a few hundred years ago by nature lovers in Europe, it’s now a well-known option for feeding hungry kids, students and adults, whether they’re relaxing or on the go.  And barrier packaging makes it possible to carry trail mix around everywhere.

Did you know trail mix is called by many different names?  It’s also known as gorp, which is an old English word meaning “to eat greedily”.  In fact, you can call a person who’s picky about food a “gorp-picker”.  Trail mix is dubbed scroggin and schmogle in New Zealand, and student feed in places like Germany and the Netherlands, where it is offered along with beer at pubs.  Whatever you call it, it’s a combination of nuts, dried fruits, and sweet treats like chocolate or coconut – it’s best eaten fresh out of a plastic pouch.  No one wants to bite into a rancid nut!

With its re-sealable zipper, a small or medium stand up bag is just the way to preserve the goodness of trail mix, so the ingredients don’t become stale due to contact with moisture or air.  An added convenience is that gorp lovers don’t have to fiddle with a baggie and twist tie when they’re out hiking in the woods.  There’s no need to spill that goodness out onto the forest floor, where it will be eaten by squirrels!
