Can Stand Up Bags Be Used For Packaging Cat Litter?

Packaging Cat LitterYes, most certainly! The ability of stand up pouch bags for packaging pet food has been proven, and their special features are useful for packaging cat litter as well. Cat owners love this flexible food packaging option because it allows them to feed cats without the troubles that come with using older cat food packaging methods. Cats love them because stand up bags are safer than tin cans and other packaging methods. Manufacturers have come to embrace stand up bags because they are cheaper to produce, and their use does not compromise on the quality of packaging and consumer friendliness. How do these qualities stack up when it comes to packaging cat litter? Let's explore that in this article.

Cat litter industry in the U.S.

Cat litter is a different kind of product. The packaging requirements for its use are different from the packaging requirements of cat food. It needs proper dryness or it can form clumps. Invented by H. Edward Lowe of Michigan in 1947, cat litter sales constitute a multimillion dollar industry today. Sales of cat litter in the United States were over $750 million in 1994.

Cat litter is a unique product. Unlike dogs, cats don’t have to be taken out for walks when they want to relieve themselves. They can have a litter box, and the cat litter can be put into it. This is why owning a cat can be sometimes easier than having a dog.

Contents of cat litter

Lowe made his cat litter from clay. Clay still continues to be an important constituent of cat litter, and over 90 per cent of it is clay. Other ingredients for cat litter are wood, paper, grain, citrus, grass, and corn cobs. Manufacturers also include odor absorbers and other materials to remove bad odor. Different mixes of these ingredients produce different types of cat litter. Currently there are two popular categories of cat litter – non-clumping (conventional) and clumping. A major difference between the two categories is that clumping litter turns into solid on coming into contact with water and other moisture.

Where do stand up pouches fit into this?

Stand up pouches are made from several layers of plastic. Together these layers provide an effective protection against moisture, which is essential for keeping clumping cat litter safe and salable. The use of zippers and other accessories makes stand up bags resealable. It eliminates the need to find a separate container to store cat litter, allowing consumers to use a pouch several times. Together this usability and protection ability makes stand up pouches the best method to package cat litter.
