Yes. The effects are especially noticeable in boxes that cannot be resealed. Cereals in these boxes can often go rancid and stale because of atmospheric moisture. Manufacturers are aware of this so many of them have turned to creative food packaging that uses stand up bags with accessories to keep cereals fresh long after they have been opened. Accessories such as zip locks allow consumers to reseal their pouches and store cereals in the condition in which they were bought. This has twofold advantages – (a) consumers do not have to extra containers to store cereals, and (b) cereals remain fresh long after the packaging has been opened.
Manufacturers prefer these pouch bags over other packaging methods for one more reason – economy. It is cheaper to produce stand up pouches than any other mainstream packaging medium. A typical custom printed stand up bag costs between 15 and 20 cents apiece. This is less than half the cost of a carton box that costs upwards of 35 cents. In stark contrast to stand up pouches, it is even more expensive to buy boxes that can be resealed. Despite being cheaper, stand up pouches do a better job of preserving cereals after the packaging has been opened.
