The use of stand up pouch bags in packaging has been growing exponentially during the past few years. This new packaging medium has taken the world of packaging by storm. Made from multiple layers of plastic, aluminum, and other materials; these packages are strong, inexpensive, and provide tremendous opportunities for manufactures for advertising. Manufacturers love these bags because they eat up so less resources to produce, store, and transport; yet they provide all the advantages of more expensive traditional packaging mediums.
There are three fundamental measurements of a stand up pouch – width, height, and bottom gusset. Within these three parameters, the stand up pouches offer a huge variety in shape and size. In this post, we will limit ourselves to the bottom gusset that is made from additional material, which expands on filling. This gusset can be designed specifically to meet your needs. If you are a manufacturer thinking of switching to stand up pouches, but are confused about which gusset will suit your product, this information is just what you needed.
Currently the gusset comes in three different styles. The choice of the gusset depends on the product you want to package. It also depends on the weight of the product. Below we are looking at each of these gusset styles to find out which suits your product the most:
(1) Round bottom gusset
The edges of this gusset are glued to the supporting walls. This design gives extra strength and support to the whole structure. This is also the most common gusset style. It can be used to package a variety of food products. It is typically used for food and beverage packaging weighing less than 500 grams, or one pound.
(2) K-seal bottom
If a pouch manufacturer raises the point at which the gusset meets the supporting walls to an angle of 30 degrees, the gusset becomes a K-seal bottom gusset. This design is useful to package products weighing more than one pound. This design also permits more room inside the package.
(3) Plow bottom
This third type of gusset is not separate from the rest of the body. The gusset is a part of the pouch because the whole pouch is made from a single piece of film. There are no seals in this design. This property makes plow bottom gusset very popular among flour and sugar manufacturers. This design is ideal for products that weigh more than a pound. It can also sit straight on a store shelf.
