Get a UPC Code on Bag of Granola to Sell at Farmer's Markets

Granola PackagingA Universal Product Code (UPC) is a number that shows under a barcode on many products in the United States. It is a unique identification number which is associated with the company selling the products. A nonprofit organization GS1US allots the UPC numbers to companies for a fee. Granola manufacturers, like other small and big businesses, too can simply pay a fee and get the UPC number for their product. The fee depends on the manufacturer’s annual revenue and the kind of granola they are selling. There is also an annual maintenance fee to be paid to GS1.

There is an alternative less expensive way to get a UPC code for your granola packaging. Some internet based companies resell UPC codes for a lesser amount as compared to the fee charged by GS1. You can get a UPC number for your stand up bags that refers to your dry food packaging but uses their company name. This is an attractive solution for small retailers who are tight on cash and selling only one or two products. This, however, is not feasible for large businesses as GS1 usually requires big business houses to have their own unique UPC codes. Based on your company size, you can make the right choice.
