The first dimension of a stand up pouch is the opening or width. The second dimension is height or length. We measure both height and opening by measuring the outside dimensions (OD). The third dimension of measurement is the bottom gusset. To measure the gusset, open the pouch and measure the OD where its width is maximum. This is not a perfect method. Nonetheless, it is sufficiently accurate for most practical purposes.
Aside from the opening, height, and bottom gusset; it is useful to take a features measure. The features include zip locks, tear notches, hang holes, and others. They are measured from top to bottom (FTE). Zip locks are given a number based on how far their center is from FTE. Tear notches are measured by how many sides they have - one or two. To measure hang holes, we look at their shape - whether they are round or sombrero.
