Gusseted bags look great when displayed on a retail store shelf. These bags may have a bottom gusset or a side gusset. Bags with bottom gussets cannot usually have side gussets and vice-versa. Manufacturers have to make a choice depending upon their packaging needs.

Stand up pouches with side gussets usually have a bottom shaped like a rectangle or square. This shape lets the pouches stand erect on store shelves.

Bottom gusset bags resemble a square or a rectangle when they are filled with something. These flexible pouches are used to package various items and they are popular with customers because of their aesthetically pleasing design.

It is easy to measure the dimensions of bottom gusseted bags. A gusseted bag has four essential measurements.

  1. Length
  2. Width
  3. Thickness
  4. Gusset (bottom or side)

Measuring the length and width
Measuring the length and width of a pouch is easy. You just need to flatten an empty pouch and measure its length and width with a scale.

Measuring the bottom gusset
In order to measure a gusset's dimensions, you have to open it and place it on a flat surface. Now you have to measure its depth with a calibrated scale.

Measuring the thickness
You can use a screw gauge to measure the thickness. Stand up pouches for food packaging usually has a thickness of 2 millimeters or less.
