Marketing Food To Kids -- And Celiac Disease

There isn't a month that goes by that we don't hear from a potential client looking to package a gluten free product.  Sadly, many of these companies evolved from Moms and Dads working desperately to help their kids that have Celiac disease.  This has led to gluten free pasta, gluten free cereal, gluten free flour, etc.  A big business for sure, but nothing compares to the struggle these parents face to alleviate the pain and struggle of their young ones.

Celiac disease was once thought to be rare and now it affects 1 in every 100 Americans, according to an article from Susan Locke, M.D. and Linda Lee, M.D. from Johns Hopkins Hospital.  Once again, many of these affected are kids, and marketing food to kids can be as tricky as the diagnosis of Celiac disease.  While many assume that you just throw in a free prize and run some advertisments on Disney channel that couldn't be further from the truth.

Gluten free products need to be protected from moisture, vapor, and odor.  They must be packaged with food grade film and frankly need more room to explain the attributes of the particular gluten free product itself.  This is where marketing to kids and custom printed stand up bags come into play.

Custom printed stand up bags, also known as printed stand up pouches or Mylar stand bags, are made from layers of highly engineered barrier film, laminated together.  This lamination creates the barrier properties to keep the gluten free contents fresher for longer, but also assists in developing a stable base or bottom gusset so the pouch can stand effectively on a store shelf.  It is the custom printing that is so critical when marketing food to kids and to their parents as well.

The custom printing on a stand up pouch is actually one of the layers of film described above.  It is trapped between other layers so it cannot be scratched or marred in any way.  Further, because the film layer itself is run separately this allows for the BOLD and DYNAMIC print quality, photographic images, etc that is irresistable to kids and their parents.  This printing is just as important is attractive to retailers.  The wide face and back of the printed stand up pouch provides plenty of room for the graphics but also the text describing what makes this gluten free product so good, different, delicious, etc.

While marketing food to kids involves so many different factors, one approach that is cost effective and sells more product is the custom printed stand up bag.  Want to learn more?
