Is there such a thing as flexible packaging that can stand on a store shelf and keep the contents fresh and protected from moisture, vapor, odor, and even UV rays that is landfill friendly while being recyclable too? Stand up pouches, also known as stand bags or stand up bags, are all of the above. There seems to be the notion that only paper related products could be considered good for the environment but that's nonsense. Paper products by themselves have little or no barrier properties unless they are laminated with another structure, like polyethyelene or other type of plastic. It's the plastic liner that provides barrier properties and actually increases the strength of the paper. Oddly enough, paper once it is laminated with plastic is not considered recyclable in many instances.
Stand up pouches are made from layers of barrier film laminated together. These layers make stand bags that are strong and durable, puncture resistant, and provide protection to keep the contents fresher for longer. Oh, and they can be thrown away in the trash and recycled too.
Is there such a thing as a stand up bag made from paper? Certainly, but once again, the paper needs to be laminated with another substrate and it's this lamination that drastically affects its ability to be recycled. One of the best ways to satisfy folks who want stand bags that are more natural looking is by using BOPP in the structure. BOPP stands for biaxially oriented polypropylene and when it is printed the end result is a muted or softer print without the shine and gloss. This translates into a more natural looking stand up bag that still has incredible barrier properties, is recyclable and landfill friendly too. Want to learn more?
