For centuries, dogs have played an extremely important role in safeguarding American citizens — not only as protective household pets, but also as active combat animals in the United States military.
The keen senses canines possess make them invaluable in wartime situations. From apprehending insurgents to tracking targets, along with their astute sense of smell, high running speeds, forceful bite, exceptional vision, agility, and strength, dogs have innate gifts that simply cannot be replicated by humans or machines. These warrior dogs have saved tens of thousands of lives, but did you know that until the year 2000, it was legal and common practice to euthanize K-9s after they completed their services?
All of that, and more, changed in 2013 when the Warrior Dog Foundation was established. Mike Ritland, who served as a Navy SEAL in Operation Iraqi Freedom, created the non-profit charitable foundation to protect these dogs and give back to the Special Operations K-9 community. Once a warrior dog has completed its service and is unable to return to their handler, the Warrior Dog Foundation steps in to transition these animal heroes and treat them with the utmost care for the rest of their lives. The foundation’s fully functional kennel serves as a sanctuary for military dogs that need a home, where the animals receive mental and physical rehabilitation, along with special protection to ensure they live healthy, full, and happy lives until the very end.
Sarah says nutrition is one of the most important things handlers need to focus on when caring for a warrior dog — just as a human soldier or athlete requires a balanced diet and special regimen related to his or her health, dogs also need this type of nutrition to keep them active and strong. K9s at the Warrior Dog Foundation are given high-end supplements that are conducive to their lifestyle, and the NASC has played an important part in overseeing the entire animal health industry. By regulating supplements, as well as ethical manufacturing processes, labeling practices, and compliance throughout the entire industry, dog owners around the world can be sure their beloved pets are consuming the very best supplements that will boost their health and quality of life.
In this complimentary, on-demand webinar, Sarah delves into K9 duties and military missions, why the Warrior Dog Foundation is unlike any other organization of its kind, and how you can do your part to help these heroic animals.
Sarah will also be speaking at the upcoming NASC Annual Conference, taking place May 17-20 in Horse Shoe Bay, TX. Her presentation on the evening of the 19th is open to the public, and both David and Bill will be in attendance, speaking to the crowd over the duration of the event about the ins and outs of animal supplements, pet product packaging, regulations, and what each of us can do to safeguard our pets and spark real, positive change in the animal health industry.
