As I mentioned in an earlier post, stand up pouches, also known as stand bags or stand up bags, can be recycled and are certainly landfill friendly. Every week we are asked for a more earth friendly stand bag, something biodegradable that also will break down easily while of course keeping the contents fresh. My response is not meant to be cute but to the point, stand up pouches are recyclable, they can be tossed away in the recycling bin and they will certainly keep your product fresher for longer.
Many people have bought into the jargon that all plastics are bad for the environment, where paper and paper products are much better. This is nonsense. Paper by itself has little or no barrier properties, so it must be "lined" or laminated with another substrate (like plastic) which will give it some barrier properties and strength. Once paper is laminated with plastic, or even if it has some other coating (like wax used for meat and poultry cartons) technically those items are now non-recyclable and should not be thrown away with other paper products.
Here's my point, until we have clear cut and universal recycling methods, this industry will continue to be ripe with plastics mixed with paper and coated paper cartons mixed with glass bottles, etc. One thing I know for sure, stand up pouches continue to be the fastest growing segment in the packaging industry. The laminated layers protect the contents and the bold dynamic printing cannot be matched. The wide face and back allow generous space for an applied label or better yet custom printing to tell why your product is so good, yummy, innovative, wonderful, low cal, or good for you.
