To clarify further, the definition of "Sustainability" is living within the resources of the planet without damaging the environment now or in the future. As it pertains to packaging, the 3 main ways to do this is to either reduce the amount packaging that is currently being sent to a landfill, re-use the packaging over and over, or recycle the packaging and either make it into more of the same packaging or make it into something else.
Far and away the most effective way to help our environment is to reduce the amount of packaging that is used and ultimately sent to a landfill. Which leads me to my point. Kraft Foods, yes the food giant, recently introduced what they call the Yes Pack for their salad dressings, a spouted stand up pouch with a handle. It is clear that they are looking to move away from glass and plastic bottles and reduce the amount of packaging. Further, they will clearly enjoy the benefits of reduced freight and storage of all those bottles plus the consumer will be able to extract nearly all of the salad dressing without any being left behind.
In closing, spouted stand up pouches are certainly NOT dead. In fact, if Kraft Foods has put their marketing muscle into the Yes Pack, you can be sure this is only the beginning. Want to learn more?
