Stand Up Pouches for Product Packaging

What Are the Advantages of Using a Gusseted Stand Up Pouch?

From wooden containers, to glass jars, to plastic bottles, and then ultimately to gusseted pouch bags - the world of packaging has been evolving fast. Only two centuries ago people used clothes and wood to package products. They are non-existent in today’s marketplace. How many times have you bought lentils in a wooden box? Or rice in a heavy cloth bag? Modern supermarkets do not sell products in old packaging.

Thirteen years into the 21st century, plastic has become the most favored packaging medium. Nearly everything you see around in a supermarket is packaged in plastic. It can be plastic bottles, plastic jars, or more recently plastic gusseted stand up pouch bags.

A juice maker Capri Sun was the first company to use stand up bags commercially. That happened during the early 1960s. There was practically no stand up pouch manufacturer in the United States then. Therefore it took a long time for the packaging industry to get used to stand up bags.

Today industries across the country are using gusseted pouches for the many advantages they provide. Here we are listing four advantages that gusseted bags have over other packaging options:

Advantage one – The Ability to Stand Erect

The bottom of a bottom gusseted bag is flat. This is true for all the four kinds of bottom gusseted bags. The flat surface of the bag allows the pouches to stand erect without any external support. The gussets are designed in such a way that when the pouch is filled with a product, most of the product sinks to the bottom of the pouch - near the gusset. This makes gusseted bag’s bottom heavy with a lower center of gravity. It is a rule of Newtonian physics which says that an object with a lower center of gravity is more stable than an object with a higher center of gravity.

Advantage two – Occupies Less Space

Compared to plastic packs, plastic jars, and bottles, gusseted bags occupy lesser space. Therefore more of these pouches can fit on a store shelf. These bags take up less space in your kitchen cabinet - making your kitchen look less cluttered.

Advantage three – Easy to Carry

The weight is more uniformly distributed in a gusseted bag as compared to several other packaging mediums. This makes it easier for store owners and consumer to carry them around.

Advantage four – Variety

The sheer amount of variety in gusseted flexible pouches is huge. You can choose between an infinite number of size and shape combinations, the variety in materials selection is immense, and the large surface area allows for expansive art work.
