Unlike other forms of flexible packaging, stand up pouches can stand erect without any external support. This is possible due to bottom gussets. These gussets also make it possible for a stand up pouch to compete with tin cans, plastic bottles, glass jars, and other kinds of traditional packaging methods because manufacturers value the ability of a packet to stand erect without any support. There are currently three kinds of bottom gussets in popular use -
(1) K-seal bottom gusset
K-seal bottom gussets are used for packaging medium to high weighting products. This bottom gusset is sealed to the pouch walls in such a way that sealed surfaces are at an angle of 30 degrees with respect to the bag walls. An advantage of this design is that it takes stress off from seals, and makes it possible to package additional stuff.
(2) Round bottom gusset
This style is preferred for products weighing less than a pound (450 grams). A round bottom gusset is sealed to the pouch walls to provide strength and support for it to stand up. The round bottom gusset is the most popular type of gusset.
(3) Plow bottom gusset
Plow bottom gussets are no-seal gussets. Pouch bags with plow bottom gussets are made from a single piece of film. This quality makes them popular among granular product manufacturers.
