Barrier bags and other kinds of stand up pouches are made from several layers. These layers are laminated together to form a single uniform structure. A heat sealer is usually sufficient to seal these layers. A stand up pouch heat sealer can seal most of the stand up bags that you see in supermarkets. As shown in the pouch heat sealer video, the device is capable of sealing at least 8mm of laminated plastic. You can find more powerful sealers but for most tasks, a heat sealer with a minimum capability to seal 8mm of laminated is sufficient.
If your requirements are not much and if the number of pouches that have to be sealed is less, a hand sealer is a great alternative. Priced at around $100, a hand sealer is the right tool for anyone looking for a handy way to seal a couple of pouches. A downside of using a hand sealer is that it is practically impossible to seal many pouch bags with it. The machine can do the job but it is not humanly possible to task a thousand stand up pouches with a hand sealer. It will not only take up a lot of time, but the process will be highly inefficient as well.
The most common type of sealer used in stand up pouch industry is the impulse sealer. There are two kinds of impulse sealers single impulse sealer and double impulse sealer. The difference between them lies in their jaws. In a single impulse sealer, only one jaw is heated, while in a double impulse sealer, both jaws are heated. Single impulse sealer is cheaper. It costs around $250. A double impulse sealer costs more than $450, but produces better results.
If your requirements cannot be met with even a double impulse sealer, you can opt for a sealer with a mini-conveyor belt. Priced at around $1,000, this sealer is capable of handling a lot of sealing work. Usually only very large companies use mini-conveyor belt sealers.
There are several other kinds of sealers as well. The more capable a sealer is, the more expensive it becomes. There are some companies, mostly overseas, that offer heat sealers at low prices. A downside of buying heat sealers from overseas companies is that most of them have pathetic after sales services. So a word of warning here - do not fall for the cheapest price.
